Low-Cost
Spay &
Neuter
Clinics

SCAR sponsors monthly low-cost spay and neuter clinics at our shelter with Dr. Sara White, Veterinarian from Spay ASAP.  SCAR is dedicated to ensuring this much-needed service to our community.  They are low-cost because of grants, donations, and volunteer labor.

The clinics are for dogs, cats, and rabbits (rabbit surgeries are $100 regardless of sex, and we can only schedule one rabbit per clinic) and require an appointment. Call the shelter office at (603) 259-3244 or email us at secondchancear.org@gmail.com to make an appointment for your pet.  We often book out several months ahead of time, especially for dogs and female cats, so please make an appointment as soon as you know you will need one.

The law requires that cats and dogs over 12 weeks of age be current on their rabies vaccination for surgery. We can administer rabies vaccines the day of surgery, but if your pet is already up-to-date, you MUST present their rabies certificate at the time of drop-off (rabies tags are not sufficient proof). Without proof of rabies vaccination, we will have to administer a new vaccine for $10. Distemper vaccinations and Microchipping are also available.  See pricing below.

Payment is due by CASH ONLY at time of drop-off.  Unfortunately, we cannot accept debit or credit cards at this time, and we no longer accept checks for clinic appointments. A $25 deposit is required for all dog appointments.

Dogs should be on leashes and cats in secure carriers. Dogs will be crated for the duration of their stay and cats will remain in the carriers except when interacting with the vet (separate carriers for those with multiple cats, please). Rabbits should arrive in secure carriers with plenty of food for when they wake up. We can provide clean, like-new cat carriers to those in need for an additional donation. If your cat or dog is over 5 months of age, do not allow them to eat after midnight the night before surgery; water is fine up until they come to the shelter. Cats or dogs under 5 months of age may eat a small amount of food prior to being brought in.

Please drop-off your pet at the shelter between 7:30 and 8:30 am on the day of your scheduled surgery, and pick-up between 4:00 and 5:00 pm (dogs may be done earlier with earlier pick-up discussed at drop-off with that day's volunteer staff). We are still doing carside service, so please wait in your car when you arrive and we will come out to you. Certificates and after-care instructions will be provided at pick-up time. It is the pet owner's responsibility to retain these certificates for their family vet's records.
